Fixed-term appointment (5 years, A 13 on the German salary scale) for a 
lecturer in general linguistics at the newly-established department of 
general linguistics at the University of Bamberg. The official German

Job summary:

The position involves teaching at undergraduate level (5 hours per 
week), including courses in both a BA and a Masters Programme. The main 
areas of instruction are the sociolinguistics of minority languages in 
the Near East, language contact, and typology. However, besides these 
core areas, the successful candidate will have considerable freedom to 
focus on his/her own special areas of interest and contribute towards 
developing the teaching profile of the department. Besides teaching, the 
candidate will be expected to fulfill administrative duties and 
contribute to establishing the web-based resources at the department. 
The candidate will be encouraged to complete a Habilitation (second 
thesis, generally required for a professorship in Germany) over the time 
span of the appointment. The position will commence on October 1, or as 
soon as possible thereafter.

Qualifications:

- PhD in general linguistics in hand at the time of appointment.

- Demonstrated expertise in a language of the Near and Middle East, 
preferably Arabic or other Semitic language.

- Research experience in at least one of the following fields: empirical 
sociolinguistics, bilingualism and minority languages, documentation of 
endangered languages, language typology

- Commitment to excellence in teaching, preferably experience in courses 
relevant to the position.

- Clear evidence of potential for research and publishing in English at 
international level.

- Knowledge of German would be a distinct advantage, but is not 
essential as the language of teaching is English.
