Dear all,

Ekkehard wrote this less than an hour ago:

In summary: this gives us a comparative concept 'adjective' and two descriptive categories 'adjectives in Italian', 'adjectives in French'. […] Do we then change our terminology?

My answer to the question is negative and the first line strongly suggests that adjectives, Italian adjectives and French adjectives are very similar kinds of things. This is very much also what Kalyanamalini Sahoo and I argue in a forthcoming paper in Acta Linguistica Hafniensia called “On comparative concepts and descriptive categories, such as they are”, not about adjectives but about such constructions. The paper is sympathetic to Martin's proposal, but also critical, not radical and not, I would say, 'defeatist' about linking up the language-specific and the cross-linguistic.
