Engaged Humanities: preserving and revitalizing endangered languages and
cultural heritage

15–16 November 2017, University of Warsaw

Chicago), Julia Sallabank (SOAS)

The Partners of the Engaged Humanities project (
http://engagedhumanities.al.uw.edu.pl/) , Faculty of “Artes Liberales” at
University of Warsaw, SOAS, University of London, and Leiden University,
hereby invite proposals for papers at the first international conference on
Engaged Humanities.

The Engaged Humanities project aims at strengthening scientific and
innovation capacity as well as social impact in the field of participatory
action research in linguistic-cultural heritage and revitalization of
endangered languages. The assumptions behind the project reflect the need
for a holistic and problem-oriented (not disciplinary-limited) approach to
both theoretical and applied issues in the study of language, culture, and
society. An essential goal also includes finding solutions for bridging
collaboration and knowledge-transfer gaps between academics, members of
local communities/ethnic minorities and non-academic
organizations.

A precedent for the Engaged Humanities project and this conference was the
conference Integral Strategies for Language Revitalization held in
Wilamowice, Poland in June 2014. The Engaged Humanities conference will be
directly preceded by a workshop on digital humanities and efficient
integration of disciplinary perspectives/practices for effective
engagement. Participants in the conference are also welcome to attend the
workshop . Successful conference proposals will address one or more of the
following topics:

● Multipurpose documentation of linguistic and cultural heritage
● Language revitalization in theory and practice
● Participatory action research and community-driven projects
● Indigenous research methodology and traditional knowledge in language and
cultural revitalization
● Economic impact of language preservation and multilingualism
● Language and wellbeing
● Cognitive effects of multilingualism
● Language contact in the context of endangerment
● Language policy for endangered language and cultures
● Pedagogical approaches to minority languages

Formal requirements:
Abstracts should be no more than one A4 pages in length including
references and examples. They should be anonymous, and set in a minimum of
12pt font. They should be in .docx or .pdf format and the filename should
start with ENGHUM, followed by an underscore and then first author’s
surname, e.g. ENGHUM_bloggs.pdf. If you have a common surname, please also
include initials, e.g. ENGHUM_jjones.pdf. Abstracts must be submitted via
the EasyChair system at https://easychair.org/cfp/ENGHUM2017 If you do not
have an EasyChair account already, you will need to create one when you do
this. Once logged in complete your details and upload your abstract as an
attachment (pdf or
docx). Conference papers will be allotted 20 minutes + 10 minutes for
discussion. A projector (VGA/HDMI) and audio facilities will be available
on site. We welcome multimedia presentations.

The main conference languages are English and Spanish. However, in
promoting language use in all domains, especially of minority and
lesser-known languages papers may be given in these languages provided it
does not unnecessarily hinder effective communication; we would therefore
suggest papers given in a language other than English or Spanish be
accompanied by adequate multimedia subtitling or simultaneous
interpretation.

The conference will take place in the Faculty of “Artes Liberales”,
University of Warsaw. ul. Dobra 72. 00-312 Warszawa, Poland

● Notification of acceptance: 12 May 2017
● Registration: 1 September 2017

Fees:
Registration for the conference is free. Coffee and tea will be provided in
the breaks. Catering will be available during lunches and can be paid on
site.
