The Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) invites
applications for one PostDocs position. The deadline for applications is
July 1, 2020.
The position is part of the collaborative project “QUEST: Quality –
Established. Testing and applying curation criteria and quality
standards for audiovisual, annotated linguistic data". (see
https://cutt.ly/quest). The QUEST project develops – in consultation
with the research community - quality standards and curation criteria
for annotated, audiovisual linguistic data and develops and tests
quality control procedures for the creation and curation of such
resources. QUEST focuses on digital research data collected through
language documentation and through research on multilingualism, but aims
to develop more widely applicable standards. QUEST will improve existing
data sets and future data collection procedures in terms of
reproducibility of research results and long-term accessibility and
reusability, also for wider scientific and non-scientific uses.
QUEST is carried out by a consortium of four German research
institutions, in collaboration with international partners. The
applicant will contribute to the subproject “AP 2.1 Kurationskriterien
für sprachtypologische Sekundärnutzung” carried out at the Leibniz-ZAS
Berlin. Responsibilities include the development of criteria for the
curation of language documentation data for cross-linguistic research,
in particular annotated texts stemming from fieldwork on small, often
endangered languages, typically in ELAN format. The aim of this
subproject is to develop and establish a label for annotated spoken
corpora that certifies their usability for cross-linguistic corpus
research, allowing for the application of quantitative methods. Another
aim of the project at the Leibniz-ZAS Berlin in Berlin is to develop and
carry out exemplary cross-linguistic studies using QUEST data in
collaboration with project partners. The successful candidate will take
over from the current state of the project, in which documentations of
individual corpora are being prepared.
Within ZAS, the applicant will collaborate with the DoReCo project
(http://www.leibniz-zas.de/doreco.html). Within the QUEST consortium,
the applicant will collaborate with the QUEST project partner projects
in Hamburg, Cologne, and Mannheim (see https://cutt.ly/quest).
We are looking for a person with experience in language documentation,
corpus building, language archiving, and in language typology and
linguistic theory. A working knowledge of German is a plus.
The PostDoc position commences on October 1, 2020, with a fixed term
until April 30, 2022. Please apply via Email until July, 1, 2020, with
one single pdf file, subject “QUEST application”, to both Frank Seifart
(seifart at leibniz-zas.de) and Manfred Krifka (krifka at leibniz-zas.de).
Your application should contain:
- A cover letter that states in particular the nature of your interest
in the project and your expertise that you would contribute
- Your CV with a list of your publications,
- The names and e-mail addresses of two persons that would provide a
reference if so asked.
ZAS is an equal opportunity employer.
