Hi Adam,

Following up on Lev's recommendation, I've found this article by Hymes
useful.

Hymes, Dell. 1994. “Ethnopoetics, Oral-Formulaic Theory, and Editing
Texts.” *Oral Tradition* 9 (2): 330–70.

It was later published as part of the book *Now I know only so far: Essays
in ethnopoetics *but the article itself is accessible as a PDF here:
