You may wish to consult Hongyin Tao's book:
*Units in Mandarin Conversation: Prosody, discourse, and grammar *which
challenges the clause as a basic unit and examines phenomena such as single NPs
filling intonation units
using the UCSB method of discourse analysis and transcription.
