Dear all,

The Institute for Linguistics at the University of Cologne invites
applications for a PhD position. The application deadline is
31.07.2024; see details below.

Project description
The DFG (German Research Foundation) project ‘Taking spoken language
seriously’ investigates the extent to which the characteristics of
spoken language, as opposed to those of written language, are relevant
in typological and theoretical research. One subproject explores
transcription practices: How do transcripts produced by different
transcribers differ? How consistent are transcribers? Alongside
experiments on European languages, the focus of research is on
Austronesian and Papuan languages, for which transcription practices
will be investigated in the field. Further details (in German) can be
found at:
https://portal.uni-koeln.de/universitaet/aktuell/presseinformationen/detail/wie-gut-repraesentiert-transkription-gesprochene-sprache.

Tasks
Tasks include the completion of a PhD dissertation on transcription
practices in linguistics. Working together with the project team -
including providing administrative support - the PhD candidate will be
responsible for the design and implementation of transcription
experiments. If applicable, the candidate will have the opportunity to
conduct fieldwork in Indonesia.

Profile
Required for this position is a successfully completed Master's degree
in linguistics. Applicants should have experience in empirical
investigations of spoken language, especially of non-European
languages, encompassing topics such as transcription, prosodic
phrasing, and working with spoken-language corpora. Candidates should
be able to work well both independently and in a team, possess good
time-management skills, and have a proven ability to compose clear and
well-written scientific texts (e.g. in a Master’s thesis).

Employment
The position is based at the University of Cologne on a part-time
basis (65%; 25.89 hours/week), for a fixed term of three years from
01.10.2024 until 30.09.2027. If the necessary prerequisites required
by tariff regulations as well as the required personal qualifications
are met, the salary will correspond to pay grade 13 as specified in
the German States’ Tariff Agreement (TVL).

Application
Application is via the University of Cologne job portal
(https://jobportal.uni-koeln.de; reference number: Wiss2406-25). The
application deadline is 31st July 2024.
