I remember a nice case many years ago in an Italian restaurant in London with an Italian colleague - the menu offered pasta con sugo di lepre 'pasta with hare sauce'. My colleague asked the waiter whether it was really 'lepre lepre' (hare hare) to which the waiter replied to be honest it's 'lepre coniglio' (hare rabbit)!

English “contrastive reduplications” or “lexical clones” appear to be relevant too. The following examples are from Ghomeshi et al. 2004 (p.308 for example 1, p.311 (2), and p.312 (3-4), with bolding added):



(1) I’ll make the tuna salad, and you make the SALAD-salad.

(2) Look at all the yellow vans on the road. Not vans like ours [i.e.

      minivans], but VAN-vans.

(3) I had a JOB-job once. [i.e. a “real” 9-to-5 office job, as opposed to an

      academic job]

(4) A: Are you nervous?

      B: Yeah, but, you know, not NERVOUS-nervous. [i.e. not “really”

            nervous]
