Dear Nigel,

allow me to remind you of two concepts which, to my mind, have proved
fruitful both in the descriptive analysis and the typology of non-finite
constructions:

 1. the open proposition/clause
 2. the oriented proposition/clause.

The webpage
https://www.christianlehmann.eu/ling/lg_system/func_domains/nexion/nexion_index.php?open=open_proposition
is on #1 and takes you to #2.

Unless I am mistaken, concept #1 was introduced into linguistics by
Östen Dahl. Both concepts have been used, i.a., by Nikolaus Himmelmann
in his analysis of the Philippine voice system
(http://publikationen.ub.uni-frankfurt.de/files/24331/AP15NF-Himmelmann(1991).pdf).

Best,
Christian
