Dear Nigel, Christian and all,
I assume that Christian is referring to one or both of two papers of mine from the 1970’s: “On Sloppy Identity<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dBLUKpvo8CC0o14LMCUDubqz5ex2o1jJ/view?usp=sharing>” and “How to open a sentence: Abstraction in natural language<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TlK3XXtkbBLtXHwUudlLqFA0SGUbftEk/view?usp=sharing>”. P lease tell me if there are any problems with the links.
Best,
Östen

Dear Nigel,
allow me to remind you of two concepts which, to my mind, have proved fruitful both in the descriptive analysis and the typology of non-finite constructions:
1. the open proposition/clause
2. the oriented proposition/clause.
The webpage
https://www.christianlehmann.eu/ling/lg_system/func_domains/nexion/nexion_index.php?open=open_proposition
is on #1 and takes you to #2.
Unless I am mistaken, concept #1 was introduced into linguistics by Östen Dahl. Both concepts have been used, i.a., by Nikolaus Himmelmann in his analysis of the Philippine voice system (http://publikationen.ub.uni-frankfurt.de/files/24331/AP15NF-Himmelmann(1991).pdf).
Best,
Christian
