Dear Nigel,

it depends on the language.s your friend commands.

My Nuovi fondamenti di linguistica, reissued in 2024 in a totally rewritten and updated edition (after thirty-five reprints and a couple of translations, although not in English), could be a useful tool to an Italian-reading person.

Best,

Raffaele

Dear All,

A friend has asked me to recommend a good basic introduction to linguistics. It's nearly 20 years since I taught any intro courses and I haven't kept up with the relevant literature. I'd like to suggest to her something that covers most subfields and with no particular theoretical slant. What would colleagues recommend? Advice gratefully received.

Best

Nigel
