Dear  Nigel,
since  historia is magistra uitae, I could recommend  Joseph & Janda's
*Handbook
of Historical Linguistics * (Blackwell  2003). I used this Handbook  in
many  courses according to the topic I had chosen for my lessons: e.g.
Phonological change,  Morphological  / Lexical change etc.  It contains
good informations and clear explanations
