Linguist Positions Available
Caterpillar Inc., the worlds' leading manufacturer of heavy earthmoving
equipment, and a major publisher and translator of technical
publications worldwide, is seeking Linguists to aid in the development
and maintenance of the Technical Information Department's Automatic
Machine Translation (AMT) system for use in authoring and translating
their technical publications. The Caterpillar AMT system includes a
system of controlled English input written in CTE (Caterpillar
Technical English) and analyzed and monitored by linguistic software
used by the English technical writers.
Candidates for these positions must possess a combination of knowledge
and experience of general linguistic principles; keen attentive
interest in linguistic structure; innovative interest in, aptitude for,
and/or experience with authoring, composition, and editing issues,
including electronic document delivery; teaching experience/ability;
excellent writing skills; knowledge of and sensitivity to computational
linguistics issues; and a knowledge of translation and lexicon-building
issues. The positions require an M.A. or equivalent in Linguistics and
skills in the above-mentioned areas. Candidates must have
native-speaker competence of English and familiarity with at least one
other language. Familiarity with mechanical and/or electronic
technical systems is highly desirable, as is familiarity with SGML
systems. Excellent interpersonal communication skills to interact
witih translators, authors, translation vendors, software and hardware
suppliers, computational linguists, and terminology experts is
required. The position is scheduled to begin January 2, 1996.
