The Fourth International Conference on Narrative
October 13 - 15, 1995

The University of Kentucky Department of Communication
invites your submissions to the Fourth International
Conference on Narrative, to be held Friday, October 13, to
Sunday, October 15, in Lexington, Kentucky.
THE THEME OF THIS YEAR'S CONFERENCE, UNITY AND DIVERSITY,
suggests topics that address the rich spectrum of
theoretical and methodological discourse in our field. It
reflects a growing concern, articulated by the participants
OF LAST YEAR'S CONFERENCE, THAT THE INTERESTS THAT UNITE US
appear to be submerging in increasingly heterogeneous
language. The time may have come, then, to take stock of
past achievements and to chart some directions for the
future.
As in previous years, we would like to bring together
scholars from across the humanities and social sciences,
such as linguistics, psychology, anthropology, folklore,
COMMUNICATION, LITERARY HISTORY, PHILOLOGY, WOMEN'S STUDIES
and all others interested in narrative. Theoretical and
methodological contributions are as welcome as case studies
of narrative in context.
THIS YEAR'S CONFERENCE WILL FEATURE TWO ROUND-TABLE
discussions, one focusing on theoretical, the other on
methodological issues described by the conference theme.
Programmatic statements of no more than five minutes by up
to six participants will be followed by a round-table
discussion with participation from the audience. Please mark
YOUR SUBMISSION 'ROUND-TABLE/THEORY' OR 'ROUND-
TABLE/METHODOLOGY' IF YOU WOULD LIKE IT CONSIDERED FOR
inclusion in either event.
The International Conference on Narrative is a working
event. Meeting rooms are available ad hoc for more intensive
data sessions and discussions that cannot be accommodated in
the main program. To preserve its productive and interactive
nature, no more than about one hundred fifteen-minute
presentations, in addition to a poster session, will be
scheduled. If you prefer the poster session format, please
MARK YOUR SUBMISSION 'POSTER SESSION.'
The prepaid registration fee of $60.00 includes box
lunches, refreshments, and a subscription to the conference
volume. A reduced prepaid registration fee of $20.00 is
available for students and the unwaged. It includes
refreshments, but neither box lunches nor the conference
volume; additional subscriptions are $20.00. After September
1, 1995, the regular registration fee will be $70.00, the
student registration $25.00.
We are greatly pleased to announce two special conference
events:
Thursday
ALL-DAY WORKSHOP ON QUALITATIVE COMPUTING
LEARN FROM THE EXPERTS ABOUT NUDOIST, THE LEADING SOFTWARE
package for the analysis of nonnumerical, unstructured data
in qualitative research. Participants will be able to
acquire copies of the software at a substantially reduced
price. Preregistration is required for this workshop. The
registration fee of $120.00 includes lunch.
Saturday
KEYNOTE ADDRESS by Jerome S. Bruner, School of Law and
Department of Psychology, New York University.

January 31, 1996, will be reviewed for inclusion in the

Corpus-Based Approaches to Dialogue Modelling
June 9, 1995
Call for participation
On June 9, the ninth international Twente Workshop on Language Technology
(TWLT 9) will take place at the University of Twente, Enschede, the
Netherlands. This time, the workshop will be devoted to approaches which
emphasize the use of empirical data as a basis for dialogue modelling.
Special attention will be paid to the exploitation of man-man and
(simulated) man-machine dialogues for the design of (spoken) dialogue
models and systems.
Proceedings will be available at the workshop. More detailed information
about the programme will be available in March at

The workshop will be organized around the following subjects
* corpus based methods as applied to dialogue modelling
* methods for evaluating implemented dialogue models
* dialogue formalisms, speech acts, dialogue grammars
* intention based approaches to dialogue modelling
* tools and methods to obtain and process dialogues
* multimodal dialogues

Conference Site
The workshop will take place in the "Demozaal" in building L of the
Informatica-complex at the campus of the University of Twente, Enschede,
The Netherlands. The campus can be reached by car (follow the route to
'Universiteit') and by bus from Hengelo station (nr. 15 or 51) or from
Enschede station (nr. 1 or 51). The workshop is a 10 minutes walk from the
campus entrance. Follow the red signs reading "TWLT".
