The Text Encoding Inititiative was a pioneer effort by dozens of scholars
over the world to provide their conclusions concerning the optimal way to
consistently and comprehensively encode a vast range of text types and
features. This work documents the course of the efforts of these scholars.
It is an excellent companion to the TEI Guidelines.
