I am currently off LINGUIST but need to know where I can contact the
International Phonetic Associattion for a copy of the latest version of
the IPA in hard copy. Could anyone on Linguist who has the requisite
information mail me at the above address? I would be most grateful.

Subject: identify the word 'subati'
Hi Folks,
I was wondering if someone could identify and translate the following
word "subati". This a friend asked me if I knew where it was from and what
it meant--I don't. The man who was said to have used the word was supposedly
wearing a turban and clasping his hands together as in offering a greeting.
The spelling I used above is based on the way my friend pronounced the word,
so it may not be accurate. Can anyone give me the specific language it comes
from and a translation?
Thanks,
Douglas Oliver

Subject: Query: morphological umlaut in Modern English
Hello, everybody
I am looking for possible evidence for productivity of i-umlaut in
Modern English morphology. I am specially interested in analogical
reformations of the adjectival comparison system (on the muster of old -
elder - eldest) and/or the nominal plural marking (on the muster of,
e.g., foot - feet). I know of one such example, namely moose - meese,
and I wonder if there are any other simIilar cases. All quotations,
references, examples welcome.
Please, send your mail to this address:

Subject: Computer-Mediated Communication in Languages other than English
Dear Colleagues,
I am interested in how computer-mediated communication (e-mail,
news groups, etc) affects language use in languages other than
English. I am particularly interested in how users attempts to give
their messages "orality" by breaking established rules of written
language (orthography, punctuation, syntax, style, etc). Please
send any references, examples, or impressions directly to me at the
following address:
rjfouser at kic.ritsumei.ac.jp
Thank you for your cooperation. I will do my best to post my
findings.
Robert J. Fouser
