Applications are invited for a tenured post as Sen. Lecturer (Danish:
Lektor) at the Department of Linguistics, University of Aarhus,
Denmark.
 
The responsibilities of the post comprise research and teaching within
an area which the department wants to strengthen: the study of
language diversity, particularly in Denmark.  Work within this area
may focus on various aspects, e.g. minority languages in Denmark, and
contacts between these and 'mainstream' Danish; or, more generally,
the language situation of immigrants, minority languages in education,
language contact in the border region between Denmark and Germany or
in Greenland, minority languages in Europe.
 
	Qualifications are required on Ph.D. level, with some years of
experience also after Ph.D.  graduation.  Relevant qualifications may
have been acquired, for instance, through work within
sociolinguistics, particularly with bi- or multi-linguality and
language contact; or through work with foreign language acquisition,
particularly in the minority language situation in a majority language
school; or through work with contrastive language description,
particularly contrastiveness across distant cultures.
	
Whatever the approach of our future colleague, we shall expect him or
her to be able to initiate or take part in empirical projects within
the area defined for the post, and to be willing and able to
contribute to the basic teaching in the department (language analysis
and linguistic theory).
 
	Proficiency in Danish is an obvious advantage, but not an
initial necessity: we trust that the right kind of applicant will be
willing and able to acquire, within a reasonable time, enough Danish
to be able to apply his or her theoretical knowledge to the study of
language diversity in Denmark.  However, for reasons to do with
teaching and publication, proficiency in English, German, or a
Scandinavian language is required from the start.
 
	The application should include 1) a brief curriculum vitae,
including details of teaching and administrative experience, research
and publications; 2) copies of academic diplomas, and documentation of
language proficiencies and teaching experience (if available); 3) any
written material the applicant finds it relevant to submit (thesis,
publications, etc.); 4) references, if available.  Further, a sketch
for a research programme is welcome.
 
	Salary between 290.000 - 390.000 Dkr. pr. year (incl. an
obligato ry pension fund contribution, of between 24.000 - 34.000
Dkr. a year) depending on qualifications and experience.  The
appointment will be from 1st January, 1997.  Before the appointment is
finalized, the entire recommendation of the selection committee will
be sent to all applicants for comments; in all other respects the
appointment procedure is of course confidential.

POTENTIAL APPLICANTS:
 
This job is at my community college, but I'm just returning
from educational leave and so don't know all the details.
Knowing the red tape, I suggest:
 
(1) Applying if you think you might be interested, always
knowing you can withdraw your application if you discover
later some of the job requirements don't fit your interests.
(2)  Send a resume immediately along with a letter that
states your desire to apply.  Then make sure all the
applications are correctly filled out and sent in.  My
experience has been that a resume sent before the
deadline establishes you as eligible.  However, regulations
*require* that certain application forms be filled out.  Usually
(but I can't promise) there is some leniency on the date
the official application forms are received if a resume has
been received before the application deadline.
(3)  From April 28-May 13 I will be in and out of my office
and can probably answer at least some questions.

Personnel considers it an INSTRUCTOR position, and refers to

JOB AD:
 
Central Piedmont Community College invites applications
for a coordinator for its state-of-the
art ESL/Foreign Language Laboratory.  This is a
faculty position, one-third load teaching and two-
third load supervising the laboratory.  A Master's
degree and at least 18 graduate semester hours in a
foreign language or ESL are required. The applicant
should have expertise in foreign language pedagogy,
computer applications, and teaching experience in
at least one of the following:  French, German,
Spanish, or English as a Second Language.
