Announcing:  Humanities Predoctoral Fellowship in Linguistics
	      at The Ohio State University

The Department of Linguistics at The Ohio State University seeks
applicants for a dissertation-year fellowship, beginning in September
1996, leading to a tenure-track faculty position.  This fellowship is
available to U.S. citizens who are members of groups traditionally
underrepresented in Linguistics and in academia.  Applicants must have
completed all Ph.D. requirements except for the dissertation by the
start of the Fellowship.  The Fellowship carries a one- year stipend
of $25,000, along with normal benefits, and $1500 in travel and
research funds.  The recipient will be asked to teach one one-quarter
course during the Fellowship year, and to complete the dissertation
during that year.  The Fellow will be expected to be in residence in
or around Columbus and to play as active a role in the Department's
intellectual life as her or his research program permits. We are
interested in the most promising teacher- scholars regardless of area
of specialization within Linguistics, and welcome applications from
all qualified candidates.  If the dissertation is successfully
completed within the fellowship year, and evaluations of the year's
work are positive, the fellow will be offered a tenure-track faculty
position for the following year.  Application deadline is April 1.

              ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP: UPDATE (3/1/96)

Here's the 2nd update for the Zhonghua Scholarship Program (1996
Fall). A brief description for the Scholarship is attached at the end
of this message for those who missed the announcement. If answers to
your question is not included in this update, it will most likely
appear in the next one. Thank you for your patience.

* NUMBER OF RECIPIENTS AT ONE SITE:
To provide peer support, each hosting school in China will have a
minimum of two recipients.
* PROGRAM A OR B
You should indicate in the cover letter which program you are
applying to.
* TEACHING VS STUDY
The Scholarship Program is one that combines studying abroad,
teaching and cultural education. The focus is an alternative way
of learning Chinese that emphasizes language acquisition in its
native context rather than formal classroom instruction. The
total hours of EFL teaching is between 10 to 15 per week at K-12
levels. Yes, training in EFL is included as part of the
orientation.
* LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Ideally, all letters of recommendation should be sealed and
included as part of the application package, but it can also be
sent to WCCEC directly. Make sure it is marked (Re: name of
applicant) on the envelop.

======= Attached: ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP (Description) =======

Jointly established by the Cross-Culture Education Center of
Washington (WCCEC) and educational institutions both in China and the
United States, the scholarship is open to all native speakers of
English who are interested in various aspects of China and the Chinese
language. Through both of its programs (Program A: one-year; Program
B: one-semester), the scholarship offers an opportunity to study
Chinese or conduct a related research in China, to teach English in
China and to travel in China. Every recipient is provided with round
trip travel expenses from the U.S. departure point to the hosting
institution in China, room and board, health insurance as well as a
monthly stipend that equals to the monthly salary of a university
professor in the local area. The deadline for application is April 1st
for both programs (Program A: 9/96-7/97; Program B: 9/96-2/97) but

    The ACT Washington Office would like to call your attention to a
    new grant opportunity help advance the information superhighway.

    The U. S. Department of Commerce has opened the next round of
    competition for grants for extending benefits of advanced
    telecommunications and information technology to rural and
    urban underserved Americans. Since its inception in 1994, the
    information infrastructure grant program has awarded more than $60
    million in matching grant funds to nonprofit organizations, such
    as schools, libraries, hospitals public safety entities, and state
    and local governments.

    funding demonstration projects that can be replicated in other
    communities, improving access to information and communication
    technologies for  disadvantaged communities, and supporting
    innovative planning efforts.  Nonprofit organizations, colleges
    and universities, and all non-federal governmental entities are
    eligible to apply.

    DEADLINE for returning completed applications is Thursday, April
    4, 1996.

    TIIAP is currently funded under a Continuing Resolution, and NTIA
    will notify the public through the Federal Register about the
    actual funding level that will be available for the 1996 grant
    round pursuant to further Congressional appropriations action.
