LINGUISTIC THEORY
 
     Daniel L. Everett; WHY THERE ARE NO CLITICS: Pb. ISBN: 1-55671-004-6;
     xii,188 pp.; $25.00. Summer Institute of Linguistics and The University of
     Texas at Arlington.
     In this book Everett argues for the thesis that pronominal clitics,
     pronouns, and pronominal affixes are allomorphs of one another, derived
     from lexical storage of individual grammatical features, e.g., person,
     number, and gender, which are then spelled-out as pronouns, affixes, or
     clitics. Dr. Everett has carried out field research on various Amazonian
     languages and is presently Chair of the Department of Linguistics at the
     University of Pittsburgh.

     Kenneth Pike; CONCEPTOS LINGUISTICOS; translated by Thomas Hemingway and
     Katherine Langan; Pb. ISBN o-88312-712-5; xx, 116 pp.; $17.50. Summer
     Institute of Linguistics.
     Dr. Pike has long been known as a scholar and linguist. In his book
     Linguistic Concepts: An Introduction to Tagmemics he presents much of his
     basic philosophy of language and linguistics.  Conceptos Linguisticos: Una
     Intrduccion a la Tagmemica now makes his work available to Spanish
     linguists and philosophers.
     Dr. Pike is president emeritus of the Summer Institute of Linguistics and
     proffessor emeritus of linguistics at the University at the University of
     Michigan.

APPLIED LINGUISTICS
 
     Eunice V. Pike; THE LAST FIVE FEET; Pb. ISBN: o-88312-709-1; ix, 129 pp.;
     $8.00. Summer Institute of Linguistics.
 This book can be described as applied linguistics at a very practical
 level. Eunice Pike went to Mexico as a linguist and Bible translator in 1936,
 to work with the Mazatec Indians. In The Last Five Feet, she recounts
 many of here activites from 1949 to 1992. During those years she went "the
 last five feet;" that is, she spent much time with the Mazatec people,
 teaching them to use the books that had been written and translated for
 them.
 As well as her work among the Mazatec, Eunice Pike has traveled widely as a
 linguistic consult with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, especially in
 assisting other linguists with her expertise in analyzing tone languages.
