7th International Conference on Theoretical and Methodological Issues
                      in Machine Translation (TMI-97)
                              July 24-28, 1997
                         Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

First Announcement and Call for Papers

 The seventh conference in the now well-established TMI series will
take place in July 1997 in the historic city of Santa Fe, New
Mexico. The date will mark (roughly) the 50th anniversary of Warren
Weaver's famous memo which launched modern MT research.

TMI-97 will have three major themes:

 Yesterday
   -- Contributions should refer to an `old' paper (published before
      1965) and show how it is still somewhat relevant to MT today...

 Today
   -- Contributions should reflect on current trends in MT, especially
      the move towards hybrid solutions involving both established and
      novel techniques; we want to focus on particular problems and
      trends rather than overall descriptions of existing systems
      (focus on theoretical and methodological rather than
      implementational issues)...

 Tomorrow
   -- How is MT being integrated with new technologies and media, for
      example delivery via the Internet, speech translation, MT as part
      of document collection processing, MT and summarization,
      information retrieval and extraction, multimodality and
      multimedia,  etc.

Submissions referring to the above themes are encouraged. However,
submissions on other theoretical and methodological issues will be
considered as well.

Fees and Schedules

Conference Site

 The conference meetings will be held on the campus of St. John's
College in Santa Fe.

Accommodations

 Fort Marcy Hotel Suites have been selected as the primary conference
accommodations. The hotel is low-rise and consists of 1-, 2- and
3-bedroom air-conditioned suites, with one or two bathrooms, fully
equipped kitchens, living rooms equipped with TVs, video and
CD players. All the suites also feature fireplaces, though in July you
will probably not need them. We were able to negotiate favorable rates
for the participants of TMI-97. Final arrangements, which should be
completed in the near future, will be published on the conference web
page.

 Student level accommodations will also be available in the dormitories
 at St. John's College.

                     CALL FOR PAPERS

     THE 4TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE LANGUAGES OF FAR EAST,
             SOUTH-EAST ASIA AND WEST AFRICA

                     First circular

     The Institute for Asian and African Studies (Moscow State
University) and Saint-Petersburg State University are pleased to
announce that the 4th International conference *The languages of Far
East, South-East Asia and West Africa* will be held in Moscow,
September 17-20, 1997.
     Building on the success of its predecessors (Moscow 1991, 1993,
1995), this conference aims to encourage a spirit of dialogue between
students of Far East/Southeast Asia and of West Africa. The conference
offers a unique opportunity for its participants to exchange views on
the languages whose structures share so many features, despite the
genetic or areal unrelatedness.

     The main theme of the 4rth conference will be *LEXICON AND
GRAMMAR IN THE LANGUAGES OF FAR EAST, SOUTHEAST ASIA AND WEST
AFRICA*. Those who have responded to the 1st circular will be offered
a questionnaire where the principal points of the proposed discussion
are going to be outlined.

     Working languages will be Russian and English.
     Applications and 100-words-long abstracts are invited to be sent

     Deadline for response to the 1st circular is Dec, 10, '96.
     Notifications of acceptance will be mailed out before  March, 1997.

     The final version of the paper (3 single-spaced pages) is going
to be requested camera-ready sent along with 3.5" or 5.14" floppy
disks in WinWord format, version 2 and above. In the case of using
non-standard fonts, the authors will be kindly requested to send the
fonts in TRUE TYPE format with the same diskette.
     Papers will be eligible for publication in a special volume of
the conference proceedings.
     Registration fee is USD 50. The registration fee includes the
volume of conference proceedings, coffee-breakes, lunch (please
specify if you require a vegetarian or vegan option), cultural
program, etc.
