Thank you to those of you who responded to my request for
information on computer-assisted langage learning programs at the
PhD level.  I've reconstructed everything so that those
interested can respond to the addresses, etc.

You may want to check School of Education at University of
Massachusetts at Amherst which has a PhD program in Instructional
Technology.  I know some PhD students who are working with faculty and
research fellows in the department of Information Technology (Computer
Science) and those in the school of Ed jointly for their thesis
project.

Dear Melanie,
I am doing a PhD at the Language Centre on CALL but as you might
know things are different here in Britain. There is no PhD
program as such i.e. in the meaning of a number of courses. Once
you are interviewed by members of a panel and your PhD proposal
is accepted, you start your research. You can see your supervisor
whenever possible but most students stick to a one meeting/week.

Dear Melanie,
 
I don't know if this will be of much help, but you may want to
contact Prof. Bob Hart at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
As part of my PhD studies I took a course from him on
computer-based foreign language learning. His e-mail address is
<hart at ux1.cso.uiuc.edu>.  If it's not possible to follow this
course of study at U of I, he may at least know of other
institutions which offer such programs.
 
U of I offers an interdisciplinary certificate PhD in Second
Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE), in which graduate
students from the Depts of German; French; Spanish, Italian &
Portuguese; Linguistics; East Asian Langs; Educational
Psychology, etc. participate.
 
I for example am getting my PhD in German, but am doing
sociolinguistic research on the impact of English in Germany for
my dissertation.
