The Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, University of
Alberta, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the
junior Assistant Professor level, effective 1 July 1997.  The
candidate should hold the PhD and have a specialization in
phonology, an active research program in experimental
linguistics, and demonstrated teaching ability.  The salary range
for Assistant Professors is $39,320 - $55,526.

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta is engaged in an
extensive process of renewal, and is committed to ensuring that
the substantial number of hirings projected over the next several
years will ensure for the future the lively and productive
intellectual environment on which the Faculty prides itself.

The Department of Linguistics has a strong commitment to
empirical and experimental approaches to linguistic research.
Department members are engaged in ongoing research projects, many
grant-funded, in experimental phonetics, discourse processing,
and the study of the phonological, morphological, and semantic
aspects of the mental lexicon.  The Department offers both
graduate (PhD and MSc) and undergraduate degrees, and values its
reputation for excellence in teaching and graduate training.

Uppsala University hereby announces as vacant the following
full-time post in the University:

Postdoctoral Fellow in Comparative Indo-European Philology
at the Department of Asian and African Languages
(Registration No. 7321/96)

The main responsibility of a postdoctoral fellow is to conduct
research within the framework of the stated field of study in
order to qualify for higher research posts. The post will be held
for a limited period and the appointment will be made by the
faculty97in this case, by the Language Division of Uppsala
University97for a period of two years, with the possibility of an
extension of two years.

Work involved. Mainly own research by the holder. A certain
amount of tutoring and teaching. Assisting the responsible
professor with the overall planning of the subject.

Qualifications. A doctorB4s degree. Preference will be given to
candidates who have received a PhD degree no more than five years
before the expiry of the application period.

Basis for appointment. In ranking the applicants for the post
particular account is taken of scholarly competence.

Together with the application documents, which must include an
attested list of qualifications and posts held and a list of
works published, the applicant should submit a brief, written
account of his/her scholarly and educational activities and the
publications included in the list of works published. Also a
description of the planned research projects is required.
