		9th STUDENT CONFERENCE IN LINGUISTICS

                             May 2-3, 1997

                        Eastern Michigan University

		Department of English Language and Literature
			   Linguistics Program

The ninth student conference in Linguistics (SCIL 9) will be held from
May 2-3, 1997 on the campus of EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVSERSITY,
Ypsilanti, Michigan. This is a preliminary announcement so you can
reserve the date; look for the call for papers later this month. The
anticipated deadline for receiving abstracts is January 15, 1997.

Our goal is to have as diverse a representation of subfields of
wlinguistics as possible. To this end we will accept and encourage
submissions from all established areas of theoretical linguistics.

Getting to Columbus:
Columbus is reachable by all major airlines; the airport is about 20
minutes from the center of the city, and the University (c. $20 by
cab).

Hotel information:

Here are some possibilities for lodging near the university:

1.  Victorian Bed & Breakfast, 78 Smith Place, about a 10-minute walk
from where the meeting will be.  The rate is $55 per night, breakfast
included; contact Marjorie Jones at 614-299-1656 and mention the
Linguistics Department.  They can pick you up at the airport and drop
you there for approximately $10 extra each way.

2.  Holiday Inn on the Lane, 328 West Lane Avenue; 614-294-4848;
mention the Linguistics conference for a special rate of $69 per room
(no matter whether it is a single or a quadruple).  They have a
shuttle service to/from the air- port, and are about a 15-minute walk
from the meeting site.

3.  University Ramada Inn, 3110 Olentangy River Road, 614-267-7461;
mention the linguistics conference for a special rate of $66 per room.
It's a bit far from the University, but we can help with
transportation if necessary.

4.  Red Roof Inn; 614-267-9941 (or 1-800-843-7663); not exactly
walking distance but closer than the Ramada Inn (farther than the
Holiday Inn); there is a possibility of walking to nearby OSU housing
and getting a shuttle bus from there, but perhaps not on weekends; the
price is in the $40-60 range, depending on how many beds and how many
people per room.

On a very limited basis, we can try to arrange crash space for
students interested in coming to the conference.
