I would like to thank all those who replied to my query regarding the
pronunciation of the French place name _Ascq_ (as in Villeneuve-
d'Ascq, near Lille). The -s- is indeed pronounced (i.e., /ask/).
I would like to thank:
Joe Carson <jsoc at st-andrews.ac.uk>
David Roussel <roussel at thomson-lcr.fr>
Sophie Heyd <heyd at clsh.u-nancy.fr>
Philippe Mennecier <phm at cimrs1.mnhn.fr>
Martin Wynne <eiamjw at comp.lancs.ac.uk>
Stanley F. (Shimke) Levine <stanl at aiken.scarolina.edu>
David Hand <D.Hand at mmu.ac.uk>
I am particularly indebted to Chris Johns <csrj100 at hermes.cam.ac.uk>
for forwarding my query to the Francofil list <francofil at liverpool.
ac.uk> and to Stavros Macrakis <macrakis at osf.org> for pointing out the
following:
>This is also confirmed by Pierre Fouche's Traite de
>Prononciation Francaise (Klincksieck, 1959), which says (p 420) that
>final -scq is always pronounced /sk/, giving as examples Bernescq,
>Boussinescq, Magescq, Bonneboscq, Boscq. According to Fouche, final
>-sc and final -sq are also always pronounced /sk/.
I am also grateful to everyone else who took time to reply.
