THE ESSLLI'97 STUDENT SESSION
SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

Papers are invited for submission to the student session of the
European Summer School in Logic, Language and Information
(ESSLLI'97). These papers, after evaluation and selection, will be
presented during the Summer School which will take place in Aix in
Provence (France) in August 11-22, 1997. The student session will give
students the opportunity to present their work in progress and get
valuable feedback from Senior researchers and fellow-students.
Presentation of creative and innovative ideas is encouraged.
The student session has its own timeslot in the ESSLLI'97 schedule:
every day, this session will last 60 minutes. Six fields will be
considered: Logic, Linguistics, Computation, Logic & Linguistics,
Logic & Computation, and Linguistics & Computation.
Abstracts can be sent in French or in English. Presentations will last
30 mns (including 10 mns of discussion).
Student authors should submit 2 copies of an anonymous abstract
(approximately 4 pages long including references), plus a title page
with the authors' addresses and the paper's field.
The 'stylesheet' for submissions is: A4, Font Times Roman 12pt, margins 1
inch all around, 1.5 line-spacing, no columns.
Electronic submissions are highly encouraged and should be sent to the
program chair (alice at cogsci.ed.ac.uk) before Saturday May 3rd at 1.30
pm CET. Please, do send the title page separately from your
paper. Accepted formats are: Latex, RTF and PostScript.
Abstract deadline: May 3rd, 1997
Authors notifications : June 2nd, 1997
Once reviewed by experts, papers will be selected by a committee of
students and co-chairs. The ESSLLI'97 Student Session Committee is:

BEST STUDENT PAPER PRIZE
______________
Papers accepted for presentation at the ESSLLI'97 student session can be
considered for the best student paper prize. This is sponsored by the
French publisher Adosa.
This prize will consist of :
o several books in Logic, Linguistics and/or Computer Science, of a
total value of 3.000 FF (approximately 470 Ecu), chosen by the
winner among editors from the European Union.
o the entire Adosa's collection (in French) of the "Langues
naturelles et traitement de l'information" ("Natural Language and
Information Processing") series.
Students who want their papers to be considered for the prize should
submit (at the beginning of the Summer School) three copies of an
extended abstract of their paper (about 1O pages).
The best paper will be selected by the following Committee:

The Committee will base its decision on the written extended abstract
rather than the oral presentation.
The prize will be awarded during the last ESSLLI party (on Thursday,
August 21). The winner will receive there the Adosa's series. Then,
he will send to Adosa the list of books he/she wants to receive. These
books will be sent to him/her directly.

STUDENT GRANTS FOR ESSLLI'97
______________
Deadline : May 30th
Several grants will be available for participation in ESSLLI'97. They
will cover the registration fees. It is necessary to register for
ESSLLI before applying for a grant. The following criteria will be
used to select the successful applicants:
o the student's motivation,
o the economic situation of the country and the institution.
Depending on the number of requests, extra criteria will be taken into
account, in particular:
o an accepted paper to the ESSLLI'97 student session,
o a presentation during one of the ESSLLI'97 workshops.
The recommendation of the student by senior researchers will be a
plus. The application must be sent before May 30th either by e-mail,
fax or surface mail to:
