I am working on a project on definiteness and indefiniteness in
Russian (trial lecture for the doctoral degree), and I am interested
in suggestions and advice, especially about relevant literature, but

Subject:  Sanctius et les Imperceptibles


Dear Linguists, I am looking for some information concerning a paper
from Jean-Claude Milner (1985), called "Reflexions sur le concept de
categorie vide" (in Modeles Linguistiques, VII, 1, University of
Lille)

In his paper, about empty categories in generative syntax, Milner
refers to some classical and rhetoric grammarians, namely Sanctius and
Bernard Lamy.

He also claims that the Empty Category Principle of modern generative
grammar has to do with what he calls the 'hypothese des
Imperceptibles', which, he claims, is an old intuition from classical
grammar.

I would like to have some references on those two classical
grammarians, Sanctius and Bernard Lamy (the latter is apparently a
grammarian from the XVII French century)

I also need to have some background on the 'Imperceptibles'
hypothesis, which is not refered in any (consulted) encyclopaedia so
far.

Subject:  language of journalism


One of my graduate students is working on the features of English used
by reporters in articles, editorials etc. She would like to claim that
this type of English obeys specific standards in terms oforganization,
coherence, vocabulary etc. and thus may be taught as ESP ( like
scientific, business or medical English) in a foreign context, in this
case Tunisia where Arabic and French are wide spread.  Does anyone
know of books, articles ... that deal with topic?  Thank you.  Salem
