POSITION: Assistant or Associate Professor (Japanese)
EFFECTIVE DATE: August 24, 1998
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D./Ed.D at the time of appointment for
Assistant Professorship; doctorate and appropriate evidence of
teaching and scholarly and creative activity for Associate
Professorship. Appointment at the Associate Professor level possible
with clearly demonstrable teaching and research experience
commensurate with such an appointment. Candidates must have native or
near native language competency, as well as substantial knowledge and
appreciation of the target language culture. Ability to communicate
effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse community.
DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Expertise in the fields of second
language acquisition, foreign language education, applied linguistics,
and/or Japanese literature. Candidates with training and experience
in language teaching, methodology and technology will be given
preference. Also preferred are candidates who have conceptual
knowledge of the language and basic understanding of the principles of
linguistics and language acquisition. Expertise in writing grant
proposals and a record of receiving grants.
DUTIES: The appointee's normal teaching load will be 12 units per
semester. He/she is responsible to teach all levels of Japanese
courses and to develop new curriculum in accordance with his/her
specialization and expertise. He/she may also teach courses in Asian
Studies and/or Asian American Studies. The person chosen will also be
expected to contribute to the department (1) through regular research
and publication and (2) by participation in departmental and
universitywide activities.
SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with academic rank and professional
experience.
$37,140--$55,164 annually.

Subject: Syntax-U Rochester
The Department of Linguistics, in conjunction with the Center for the
Sciences of Language, is searching for a faculty member with a primary
specialization in syntax. We encourage applications from all schools
of syntactic theory, as well as candidates with interests in
computation, typology, and language contact. A Ph.D. and an
established record of excellence in teaching and research is required.
We especially encourage applicants interested in actively contributing
to a strong interdisciplinary training and research community. The
faculty member will teach graduate and undergraduate courses in
linguistics, and supervise graduate students with research interests
in linguistics, computational linguistics, and psycholinguistics.
