In Hindi, the kyaa-construction can be combined with a yes-no-question
complement.

tum kyaa socte ho ki kyaa vo aayegaa
you KYAA think be that if he will-come
do you think whether he will come

Apparently, this is not possible in Marathi:

*Sita-laa kai watle ki Ravi yenar ka
 Sita what thinks if Ravi comes y/n-particle
*Sita-laa kai watle Ravi yenar ki nahi
Sita what thinks Ravi come or not

Two questions:

(a) Do Kashmiri and Bangla pattern with Hindi or with Marathi?

(b) Do you agree with the judgements given above?

Would anybody be willing to help with examples
of

(a) recent statements questioning the validity of Afro-Asiatic?
(b) recent statements questioning the validity of linguistic
classification in general?
(c) recent statements claiming that A and B cannot be related
because of some typological difference?
(d) recent statements questioning the validity of Sino-Tibetan?
(e) any exaples EVER where a language grouping which was once (nearly)
universally accepted has come to be rejected as invalid?

Subject:  Q: Unless conditionals in Spanish and Catalan


Dear Colleagues,

I am writing a paper comparing conditional sentences of the 'unless'
type in English, Spanish, and Catalan and have had some difficulty in
finding references on conjunctions such as 'a no ser que' and 'a menos
que' in Spanish and 'tret que' in Catalan.  If anyone could direct me
to resources on such issues, it would be greatly appreciated.

If there is sufficient interest, I will post a summary.
