POSITION for PhD-STUDENT

TOPIC: LOGICAL REPRESENTATION of NATURAL LANGUAGE DISCOURSE

THE COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT.
The Department of Computer Science of the University of Twente provides
two academic degrees: Technical Computer Science, and Management and
Information Technology. Furthermore, the department provides courses in
computer science eductation for students of other departments within the
university. Research is organised within the Centre for Telematics and
Information Technology. Central topics in research are telematics, and
information technology. The department has are about 180 emplyees and
750 students.

In the group Language, Knowledge and Interaction of the Department research
is done on the field of dialogue systems (computers which can communicate
with the user in natural language). Within this framework attention is payed
to the following topics: design principles for dialogue systems, robust and
efficient parsing, uncertainty and vagueness in dialogues, modelling
dialogues by means of logical formalisms.

Within this final topic, modelling dialogues by means of logical formalisms,
there is a position for four years for a PhD-student who has to do research
on the field of logical representation of natural language discourse. A
special topic is to examine the possibilities of expressing illocutionary
forces of natural language sentences by means of modal operators. Starting
points of the project are existing formalisms like Discourse Representation
Theory, Dynamic Predicate Logic, and Game Theoretical Semantics.

REQUIREMENTS.
Candidates must have a degree in one of the fields of Logic, Language,
Computer Science, together with a clear interest for the other fields.
Candidates must feel at home with formal methods.

OFFER.
Standard monthly salary is 2184,- Dutch guilders in the first year, which
grows towards a monthly salary of 3899,- Dutch guilders in the fourth year.
In addition, the Department offers an extra payment of 8400,- Dutch guilders
in the first year, 6000,- Dutch guilders in the second year, and 3600,-
Dutch guilders in the third year.
Furthermore, the PhD-student may choose among e.g. a laptop, financial
support of expenses connected to the promotion, or free public transport.

LECTURER IN LANGUAGE AND EDUCATION (CENTRE FOR LANGUAGE AND
COMMUNICATIONS, SCHOOL OF EDUCATION)
(Temporary 3 year post)

Applications are invited for a full-time post of Lecturer to join a team
with a strong national and international reputation in teaching and
research in language  and communications.  The postholder will be
expected to work initially on the production of an Open University
distance-taught MA course on the Teaching of English to Speakers of
Other Languages Worldwide (TESOL) and also to assist in the planning and
development of other courses in language and communications.

The successful applicant for this post will have experience of TESOL and
an academic background in applied linguistics or other relevant area of
applied language study, ideally with some relevant experience of
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education, and will
be expected to be an experienced researcher with a good record of
research and to contribute to the Centre's  research activities.

The post is available from 1 January 1999 or as soon as possible
thereafter.  Appointment will be made on either the Lecturer A salary
scale (16,655 - 21,815 GBP p.a.) or on the Lecturer B salary scale
(22,726 - 29,048 GBP p.a.) according to qualifications and experience.
