Position:
Assistant Professor of English; full-time, tenure-track position to
begin August 1999. Primary background in general
linguistics. Secondary preparation in comparative literature
desirable. The fifteen-member department of English offers the BA
degree in English, the BSE degree in English education, and minors in
creative writing, literature, and professional writing. It supports
the university honors program and minors in women's studies, ethnic
studies, environmental studies, and Canadian studies.

Responsibilities:
Teaching load is normally four courses a semester, including one or
more introduction courses in descriptive grammar or the history of the
English language or linguistics; one or more courses in literature;
and one or more in composition. Opportunities to develop new courses.

Qualifications:
Ph. D. required. Primary background in general linguistics.  Secondary
preparation in comparative literature desirable. Qualifications
include the completion of a successful interview, including a
demonstration of knowledge and skills; excellent communication skills
(both spoken and written); and the ability to teach, evaluate, and
advise students.

Salary/Rank:
Assistant professor with salary and step in rank dependent on
qualifications and experience.

Essential Functions:
Effective teaching; continuing scholarly growth; service to the
department, the university, and the academic community.
