ABSTRACT:
This dissertation/book contains a comparative survey of the noun class
systems in the sub-Saharan Bantu languages. The overall aim is to describe
linguistic variation and relate that to diachronic issues. The focus is on
grammar and semantics. The study includes a tentative typology of Bantu
noun class systems, a dialectological survey of some grammatical features
related to Bantu noun class systems and a partial reconstruction of an
assumed Proto-Bantu noun class system. Data is drawn from some 330 Bantu
languages.
