ASSISTANT PROFESSOR -- CHINESE

SEARCH REOPENED: The Department of Asian and East European Languages
and Cultures seeks to make a tenure-track appointment in Chinese to
begin Fall 2000.  The appointee will be expected to teach
undergraduate level courses and, potentially, graduate courses in
Chinese linguistics and pedagogy, and to provide leadership in
organizing broad initiatives in the less commonly taught languages.
The University maintains a Language House that includes Chinese, a
Committee on East Asian Studies, and excellent working relationships
with scholars in other departments interested in East Asian studies as
well as the National Foreign Language Center, the National Endowment
for the humanities, and other Washington-based organizations concerned
with the teaching of critical languages.

The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Chinese linguistics or
another relevant discipline, high levels of proficiency in English as
well as Mandarin Chinese, a strong commitment to the field of foreign
language pedagogy, and evidence of strong scholarly achievement or
promise.  Salary commensurate with experience.
