We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Subject: Japanese Word and Character Frequency
Hello, fellow linguists.
I recently posted a request for information on Korean language data, and the
response was very helpful. I would now like to ask if anyone has similar
information on Japanese.
Specifically, I seek the following data. All frequencies are, ideally,
counts from a corpus of informal written correspondence.
1. Frequency of individual kanji characters.
2. Frequency of individual kana characters (hiragana & katakana).
3. Frequency of words. (Preferably roots, with cross-referenced affix
frequencies)
If anyone has or knows of research involving any of the above data, please
contact me off the list at "tmills at zicorp.com". I will post a summary of
responses after two or three weeks.
Thankyou.
Sincerely,
- Tim Mills -

Dear Listers,
For a friend who will be traveling to Guyana, Suriname, and French
Guiana, I would appreciate obtaining contact information on anyone in
those countries working on one or more endangered languages.
Thanks, Doug Whalen DhW
