2. SUMMER INSTITUTE  IN ARMENIAN DIALECTOLOGY
An exceptional opportunity to learn the Karabagh dialect on location!
Stepanakert, August 10-25, 2001

Historical and political conditions have made Karabagh one of the best
preservers of Armenian dialects. The Karabagh dialect is so different
from Standard Armenian (both Eastern and Western) that mutual
comprehension is difficult. This exceptional linguistic course, which
is preceded by an international conference on Armenian dialectology,
will validate the linguistic heritage of Karabagh and allow the
general public, alongside linguists and ethnographers, to learn on
location the varieties of Armenian that have engaged such eminent
scholars.

Audience
The course is designed both for linguists and ethnographers and for
interested Armenian-speaking members of the general public from all
countries and all walks of life. (Minors however cannot be accepted
unless accompanied by an adult.)

Language of instruction
Armenian save for Professor Vaux's lectures, which will contain some
Armenian and some English.

Sessions
-Introduction to the Karabagh dialects (10 hours per week)
-Introduction to Armenian dialectology (4 hours epr week)

-Melada Aghabekian (Armenian Academy of Sciences, Linguistic Institute)
-Local teachers will run small conversation classes (class size will not
exceed 15 students)

Village excursions and ethnographic events
Small vehicles will allow small groups to make free visits to nearby
villages, making it possible for participants to record linguistic and
ethnographic data in the field.

Cultural events
-Concert for the participants in the conference and the summer institute.
-August 15: participation in the blessing of the grapes at Gandzasar.
-Large banquet for participants in both sessions together.

Summer Institute
Classes meet Monday-Friday 9 AM - 12 PM
-Grammar and conversation practice in Karabagh dialect: 135 minutes
-General introduction to Armenian dialectology: 45 minutes

Afternoons and weekends will be devoted to visiting villages by car or
minibus.

Lodging options and costs
Participants must assume the following expenses (not including the cost
of makign their way to Erevan):
Registration fee: $180
(Covers participation in the course, coffee breaks, cultural events, and
the group trips between Erevan and Stepanakert.)
Lodging: $3-20 per night, depending on the type of lodging selected
(total cost: $54-360)
The least expensive hotel in Stepanakert (shower and bathroom on each
floor) costs $3 per night, and the most expensive $20 per night. Lodging
with a family will cost approximately $10 per night.
-Depending on when one arrives in Erevan, it may be necessary to procure
lodging there. High quality guest rooms at Erevan University cost $15-20
per night.

Note:
-Current political conditions allow one to travel to Karabagh without
difficulty or risk. If we learn of any changes in this situation, we
will be sure to inform you.
-The facilities in Stepanakert have improved, but are still relatively
limited. Detailed information concerning the amenities available for
each lodging option (such as hot water, public vs. private bathrooms)
will be made available in May, at which point participants will be
able to make their final registration.

Preregistration: In order to allow for the best possible organization of
the conference and institute, please return this form as soon as possible.
Preregistration is not binding.
Final registration and payment of deposit must be carried out by June 15.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The second international New Reflections on Grammaticalization conference
will be held at the University of Amsterdam, April 4-6, 2002. Scholars are
invited to submit abstracts for 40-minute papers (including 10 minute
discussion time) on current topics in grammaticalization studies. Case
studies examining the implications of particular data for theoretical
issues are particularly welcome. Deadline for abstracts is NOVEMBER 1,
2001. Notification of acceptance will be sent out by January 30, 2002.
Conference registration is 100 Euro until March 1, 2002. Late registration
is 120 Euro.

If you wish to present a paper, please provide us with a provisional title.

information on conference themes, plenary speakers, submission of
