We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Subject: Putting together the 10-best titles for a course bibliography
Dear Linguist,
I will be teaching a course in "Phonetics Applied to Second Language
Teaching", described as an "Introduction to phonetic principles and
their application to teaching and correcting second language
pronunciation".
This is an undergraduate course offered both within a linguistics
program and a teacher training program (to teach French or English as
a Second Language). No previous knowledge of phonetics is necessary.
What would be your personal favorites as a course bibliography, given
the special orientation of this particular course?
I will be happy to compile and post a "Greatest Hits" list.
Please respond to me directly (email address hknoerr at uottawa.ca)
Thank you!

Subject: Sociolinguistics of profanity
An undergrad sociolinguistics student of mine is interested in writing
a paper on profanity and verbal abuse. I have given this student the
few bibliographic sources I know of on the topic, and I would welcome
further references that my fellow listserv members may be aware of.
