Dear Linguists,
Did you know that the Linguist List now stores nearly 600 abstracts of
dissertations in linguistics? This number is still growing. The
abstracts are available on our totally new, redesigned dissertations
area in the publications mini-site at
http://saussure.linguistlist.org/cfdocs/new-website/LL-WorkingDirs/pubs/diss/index.cfm
To better serve the linguistic community, we have made several
substantial changes, not limiting ourselves only to new good looks:
all abstracts that are stored in a database are now categorized
according to their linguistic sub-field and subject language (or
language family). From the above address, you can browse the
dissertation abstracts by author or search for them by linguistic
subfield or subject language. As for March 11, 2002 we had the
following totals in each category:
Applied Ling 43
Computational Ling 44
Discourse Analysis 39
Historical Ling 33
Morphology 15
Phonetics 23
Phonology 45
Pragmatics 27
Psycholinguistics 35
Semantics 53
Sociolinguistics 64
Syntax 106
Text/Corpus Ling 12
Typology 57
The Linguist List dissertation abstracts facility is a useful research
tool; it helps you keep track of what is going on in the linguistic
world, and allows you to find information about dissertations in
subjects that are of interest to you. As already mentioned, our
archive is rapidly growing, and the access is completely free.
Another new and exciting feature is that now you can enter or update
your dissertation abstract from your own Personal Page, which is
protected by password. Some of you might have already received an
email from us containing your new login and password; if you did not
receive that email, you can still sign in as a new user. For
directions how to log in, see
http://saussure.linguistlist.org/cfdocs/new-website/LL-WorkingDirs/people/personal/persdirlogin.cfm
There are many more options available from your Personal Page, e.g. a
possibility to add/update an academic paper or add/update your
personal information for the Directory of Linguists. However, we need
funding to maintain and develop these free services to you. We have
(and need!) a staff of 11 graduate students, most of whom are funded
wholly or in part through your donations. Your contributions not only
help LINGUIST provide services like the Dissertation Abstracts
archive, but they also help these outstanding students achieve their
academic goals.
One of our editors working on this part of the website is Marie
Klopfenstein. Do see how LINGUIST List has helped her, in the second
message of this issue, below.
So far in our Year 2002 Fund Drive, we have received $16,782 of the
$48,000 we need to collect - thanks to the generosity of the persons
and institutions whose names appear at the bottom of this page. If you
have not yet contributed, why not do so right now?
Please go to http://linguistlist.org/donate.html to send us your
pledge. From there you have the choice of donating straight away by
credit card using our secure form, or you can send us a cheque later.
If you do send a cheque, please make it payable in US dollars; we get
charged about $50 a time to convert currency (no such problems with a
credit card).
Alternatively, you can hit "Reply" to this message and send us your
pledge right now by email, prior to sending your cheque. Then we will
be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be
able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit
earlier. The address to send cheques is as follows:
The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund
c/o Helen Aristar-Dry
Dept. of English
Eastern Michigan University
Ypsilanti, MI
USA 48197
As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.
Don't forget that in return for a donation of $25 or more, we would
like to send you a gift. This year, we introduced LINGUIST List tote
bags, which are proving popular thanks to their unbeatable combination
of style, space and sturdy construction. If you don't have anything
to put in them, why not donate twice and get a LINGUIST List T-shirt
too? Please visit http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html to see what
we have to offer. Do let us know in your pledge what you would like.
Remember to include your postal address and what size and style you
need.
We at LINGUIST really do appreciate your support. We could not
continue without you.
With our sincere thanks,
The LINGUIST Crew:
Anthony, Helen, Andrew, Karen, Naomi, Heather, James, Michael,
Zhen-Wei, Richard, Karolina, Dina, Renee, Steve, Marie, Gayathri,
John, Ljuba, Terry, Simin, Tomoko.

Dear Subscribers,
We thought you'd like to hear from some of the students your funds are
supporting. So this year each fund drive issue will include a brief
paragraph from one of our editors telling you, their sponsors, about
their work with LINGUIST.
And now, a few words from Marie Klopfenstein...
Working on LINGUIST has given me the opportunity to learn skills that
I might not have otherwise learned. I have developed skills with Unix and
ColdFusion, as well as an understanding of relational databases. This has
led to my growing interest in how databases can be modeled to best store
and retrieve human language data. My experience with LINGUIST may help me
to one day make contributions in this area!
