Abstract:
BEYOND BOUNDARIES: Language & Identity in Contemporary Europe, edited
by Paul Gubbins and Mike Holt, (University of
Salford)
KEY FEATURES
This book illustrates that transnational,
national, regional and local change is manifest in a variety of
linguistic and other ways and confirms that language identity in
Europe is diverse, complex and ever-changing. Some contributions focus on
territorial and regional issues and others on multiple identities
associated with migration and urban environments, while others are
concerned with identity in relation to the state or the
individual.
DESCRIPTION
Language and identity are closely interwoven: this
collection of essays examines their relationship in a multicultural
Europe and beyond and explores various ways in which language is used
to forge class, regional and national identity. The question of
multiple identity and the role of English are also considered.
