PHONOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT IN SPECIFIC CONTEXTS
Studies of Chinese-speaking Children by Zhu Hua, (University of
Newcastle)
The book is a major contribution to the cross-linguistic study of
language acquisition in general and a milestone in the study of the
acquisition of Chinese. Professor N. V. Smith, Phonetics and
Linguistics, University College London
Key Features
The first book-length study of phonological development and impairment of
Chinese-speaking children
The data in it will be of value to speech and language therapists and other
professionals
Description
This book contains a series of studies of phonological acquisition and
development of children in specific contexts:i) linguistic context:
Putonghua or Modern Standard Chinese ii) developmental contexts:
normally developing children, children with speech disorders, children
with hearing impairment, and twins.
This is the first book-length study of phonological development and
impairment of Chinese-speaking children. It provides the first
normative data on this population, which will be of value to speech
and language therapists and other professionals. It also advances the
notion of "phonological saliency" which explains the cross-linguistic
similarities and differences in children's phonological development.
