The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of California, San Diego
Department: Linguistics
Rank of Job: Rank Open
Specialty Areas: Sign Language Linguistics

Description:

FACULTY POSITION: SIGN LANGUAGE LINGUISTICS

Position: The Department of Linguistics at the University of
California, San Diego (http://ling.ucsd.edu/) invites applications for
a professorial position in sign language linguistics beginning in
2004-2005. Applications from candidates at all levels will be
considered; at a minimum, candidates should have a Ph.D. at the time
of appointment.

As the department emphasizes both theoretical and experimental
linguistic research, the research program of the ideal candidate would
combine linguistic research at any level of analysis (phonetics,
phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, or
information structure) with experimental work in first or second
language acquisition, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, or
laboratory phonology. A primary or secondary specialization in first
or second language acquisition is particularly desirable for this
position, but not required. Candidates should be able to demonstrate
the relevance of their research interests to issues in theoretical
linguistics, as well as research productivity, undergraduate and
graduate teaching ability, extramural funding potential, and ability
to interact with the sign language research community at UCSD and
affiliated institutes.

Application details: A letter of application, a curriculum vitae, two
(2) representative publications, and an official summary of teaching
evaluations, if available, should be sent to the following address:

        Sign Language Recruitment Committee
        Department of Linguistics (0108),
        University of California San Diego
        9500 Gilman Drive
        La Jolla CA 92093-0108

Please indicate in the letter whether or not you will be available for
an interview at the 2004 LSA Meeting in Boston, MA, January 8-11,
2004.

All candidates should arrange for three (3) referees to send letters
of reference under separate cover to the same address, and should
include the names and addresses of the referees (including e-mail
addresses and fax numbers) with the application. For fullest
consideration, all application materials, including letters, should be
received no later than December 1, 2003.
