Description:
The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Tromsoe is pleased to
announce TWO full-time positions in English linguistics, each lasting
4 and 1/2 years with a possibility of extension. Please note the
deadline for these positions is very soon: July 28th, 2003.
Both positions are 50% research and 50% teaching. One (reference
number 03/3066) is formally connected with Tromsoe's Center for
Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL), and the other
(03/1924) is fully open. Applicants may apply to both positions but
must submit separate applications (indicate reference number). Below
is an abbreviated version of the formal announcements for the

The Faculty has 101 positions, including 16 non-academic staff. The
Faculty conducts research and teaching in Linguistics, Comparative
Literature, Documentation and Library Science, Art History, Classics,
Norwegian, Smi, Finnish, Russian, German, French, and English.
The Faculty also includes the only Center of Excellence in Northern
Norway, the Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics
(CASTL). CASTL applies generative linguistics in a comparative context
to research problems in syntax, semantics, phonology, morphology,
language acquisition, and language change. See CASTL's home page

The positions are associated with English, a subject which currently
enjoys twelve full-time positions, five in linguistics.
The successful applicants will participate in teaching and supervising
in English linguistics at all levels. Applicants must document
competence in research and teaching of English linguistics, [including
the projects and courses connected to CASTL (03/3066)].
The positions are advertised without restriction to any specific
specialty subfield [but the applicant's research profile should be
consistent with the research aims of CASTL (see above), and the
successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research goals
of CASTL (03/3066)].
The positions are 50% research and 50% teaching and administration. A
PhD is required at the time of appointment. Salary is standard by
Norwegian regulations.
Applicants will be evaluated by a qualified committee giving primary
consideration to the academic works submitted, but other important
qualifications include pedagogical skill, experience from
dissemination and popularization, administrative experience, etc.

The application must be submitted in two parts, the application proper
(AP) and the academic works (AW). AP includes the cover letter, CV,
and all other material except for AW, of which a list should be
