Abstract:

Waranygu Bayalgu ~ Digging for Food is a bilingual book about bush
tucker, medicine and tool making plants from around the Byro Plains
region of Western Australia.

A unique book, Waranygu Bayalgu recalls the traditional uses of plants
and animals, methods of preparing foods and anecdotal stories from Mrs
Dora Dann's childhood, in English and Wajarri, the traditional
language of the Murchison. This is a story that began 12 years ago on
a field trip back to the home country, Byro Station. Stories and
photographs collected on the journey have been beautifully presented
in this full colour book, with illustrations by local Wajarri artist
Narelle Simpson.

Mrs Dann recalls the ways her grandmother used to prepare foods and
medicines, and how her grandfather made tools, what she saw as a
child, balu mayunggugundi nyanya.

Waranygu Bayalgu is the most comprehensive Wajarrri text published to
date, with a full wordlist included. Mrs Dora Dann is one of the last
speakers of the Byro dialect of the Wajarri language. This book is
very important for language maintenance and survival and will be
useful to anyone interested in Wajarri language, culture, food and
medicinal plants.
