Subject: Support on LINGUIST
Please take a moment to read the following important messages. Both
Support and Software are integral parts of the LINGUIST site that
sometimes do not get the prominence that they deserve. Both the email
annoncements and the corresponding web pages are of vital importance
to LINGUIST, and get a lot of traffic from our users.
************************************************************
So far 450 of our 17,000+ subcribers have made a donation
to LINGUIST - that's 2.65%! Please help us raise this figure
by making a donation today.
************************************************************
Dear Linguists
I'd like to take a minute to tell you about one of our smaller
services here at LINGUIST: the Support announcements. The LINGUIST
List posted 61 Support issues in 2002 (certainly not the volume we get
on other areas of our site). But the support issues are just as
important, important to students and to the future and growth of the
linguistics discipline and community.
We receive these support announcements from all over the world,
including Spain, the UK, Germany, Ireland, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and
Australia, among many others. LINGUIST even posted a support issue for
a research assistantship right here at LINGUIST! I think this is
almost poetic, we get donations from generous supporters like you, so
that we can support our student editors. And one of our student
editors posted a support issue for a position open for another student
editor here at LINGUIST who would then be supported by generous donors
like you. Still with me? Well, this is just one of the many things
that your donations go towards. By helping to support the student
editors here at LINGUIST, you are also helping many other students
find research positions and funding for their PhDs via our Support
postings.
On behalf of all of us here at LINGUIST, and the many thousands of
people who use our website, I'd like to thank all of the donors for
their continuing support of the LINGUIST List and encourage those who
are thinking about donating to do so; you're what keeps us going!
Sarah Murray
Jobs and Support editor

Subject: Software on LINGUIST
Dear Linguists,
Have you ever been sitting around with a bunch of your data and said
to yourself, "Boy, if I only had some high-tech way to deal with this
data, instead of doing it by hand, I'd be a happy linguist." Well, a
search of our Software resource listing may provide just what you're
looking for. We have links to products that do everything from parse
text to display syntax diagrams. Some cost money; some are free. We
also have an extensive listing of fonts--everything from IPA to AG
Century Old Style Cyrillic to Pinyin, most of which are free.
Judging from the number of queries we get asking for suggestions and
recommendations for software, it appears that this is a topic with
very practical applications (no pun intended). Please take a moment to
browse our list of software links at:
http://linguistlist.org/sp/Software.html
and fonts at:
http://linguistlist.org/sp/Fonts.html
You can browse by subject language, linguistic subfield, and language
family.
Then, when you get back to the home page, click where it says, "Click
here to donate now", and make your donation to LINGUIST. It is because
of your support that we have been able to implement our database and
provide you with these vital resources. And only your support will
guarantee that we have the funds to continue to do so.
Thank you.

Editor in Chief

Subject: How to Donate to LINGUIST and Contributors So Far
This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on
LINGUIST List and keep the list running. So far we have raised
$23,894.91 - Still a way to go! Thank you from all the crew for your
support.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra
penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a
scheme.
