We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.
To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Subject: Q: that noun complement clauses
One of my students is starting a Masters dissertation on THAT noun
complement clauses (ex. the belief / thought / theory THAT John was a
spy, etc.), from a syntactic and -mostly- English-French contrastive
perspective. Is anyone aware of any work, recent or not, on the
subject? Theoretical perspectives matter very little at this stage.
Thanks in advance,

Subject: tones and vowels interaction
I work on chadic languages. Has anybody got any clue (bibilographical
references) on the tone and vowel interaction? Does the vowel quality
alter the tone value or vice-versa? thanks a lot.
