7th Summer School of the Swiss Linguistics Society
"Understanding Second Language Acquisition"
Bern, September 19 - 23, 2005
Since 1993 the Swiss Linguistics Society (SSG/SSL) has been organising a
biennial Summer School on linguistic issues for Ph.D. students. The next
one is scheduled for September 19 to 23, 2005 in Bern. The general topic
is: "Understanding Second Language Acquisition".
Speakers Profile
There will be five keynote speakers: Giuliano Bernini (Università di
Bergamo), Ellen Bialystok (York University), Rod Ellis (University of
Auckland), Clive Perdue (Université Paris 8), Christiane von Stutterheim
(Universität Heidelberg).
Participants Profile
The Summer School is open for students working towards their Ph.D. in
linguistics or similar disciplines at Swiss universities. Applications for
admission should be accompanied by a summary of the Ph.D. dissertation
(project) and a letter of reference from the supervisor of the
dissertation. The topic of the dissertation need not be the same as the
theme of the summer school.
On condition that the Suisse National Research Foundation gives its
consent, no contributions are required for participation.
Ph.D. students from abroad may also apply. However, they will have to pay
the costs themselves. For such students the same requirements hold true:
all applications must be accompanied by a summary of the dissertation
research project and a reference from the supervisor of their dissertation.
Students requiring support to meet costs should submit a formal request
(stating specific reasons) to the SSG/SSL.
Post-doctoral students are invited to apply as well as any other interested
parties, especially members of SSG/SSL, who are welcome to attend provided
there is enough space. However, these individuals must cover costs themselves.
Application deadline is January 31, 2005.

Subject: 17th European Summer School: ESSLLI 2005
Meeting Description:
The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic
and computation. The school has developed into an important meeting place
and forum for discussion for students, researchers and IT professionals
interested in the interdisciplinary study of Logic, Language and Information.
In previous editions of ESSLLI the courses covered a wide variety of
topics within six areas of interest: Logic, Computation, Language, Logic
and Computation, Computation and Language, Language and Logic.
The 17th European Summer School in Logic, Language and
Information, organized by Heriot-Watt University, takes place in
Edinburgh, Scotland, August 8-19, 2005.
ESSLLI 2005 will be held just after the IJCAI-05, the 19th
International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, from July 30th to
August 5th, also in Edinburgh See URL:

The ESSLLI Summer Schools are organized under the auspices of
FoLLI, the European Association for Logic, Language and
Information.
The main focus of ESSLLI is on the interface between linguistics, logic and
computation. The school has developed into an important meeting place and

In previous editions of ESSLLI the courses covered a wide variety of topics
within six areas of interest: Logic, Computation, Language, Logic and
Computation, Computation and Language, Language and Logic.
Foundational courses aim to provide truly introductory courses into
a field. The courses presuppose absolutely no background knowledge.
In particular, they should be accessible to people from other
disciplines.
Introductory courses are intended to equip students and young
researchers with a good understanding of a field's basic methods
and techniques, and to allow experienced researchers from other
fields to acquire the key competences of neighboring disciplines,
thus encouraging the development of a truly interdisciplinary
research community.
Advanced courses are intended to enable participants to acquire more
specialized knowledge about topics they are already familiar with.
Workshops are intended to encourage collaboration and the
cross-fertilization of ideas by stimulating in-depth discussion of
issues which are at the forefront of current research in the field.
In these workshops, students and researchers can give presentations of
their research.
In addition to courses and workshops there are evening lectures,
a student session and a number of satellite events (to be announced
later). The aim of the student session is to provide Masters and PhD
students with an opportunity to present their own work to a
professional audience, thereby getting informed feedback on
their own results. Unlike workshops, the student session is
not tied to any specific theme.
Previous ESSLLI summer schools have been highly successful,
attracting around 500 participants from Europe and elsewhere.
