The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

University or Organization: Ecole normale superieure
Department: Cognitive Studies
Rank of Job: Chair of Department
Specialty Areas: General Linguistics, Semantics, Syntax, Cognitive
		 Science

Description:

The Ecole normale superieure (Paris) is opening a full professorship
in formal and theoretical linguistics. The chosen candidate is
expected to join the newly created Department of Cognitive Studies
(DEC) as of 1st September, 2004.

Applications are invited from scholars of international distinction,
with an outstanding record in research and teaching. Preferred areas
of expertise are syntax or/and semantics; but specializations in other
areas will also be considered. The ideal candidate should be able to
function within (and, indeed, foster) a strongly interdisciplinary
environment. Although faculty appointments in French academic
institutions must follow a strict, State governed procedure, there has
been a growing trend of successful foreign applications. Ecole normale
superieure is especially keen on operating on an international scale,
at all levels from student to faculty recruitment, scientific
cooperation, joint programs etc.

The successful candidate is expected to play a crucial role in
building up and running the linguistics program at ENS, in interaction
with other Departments both within ENS and in other local
institutions. (S)he is also expected to set up joint projects with
similar centers of excellence in Europe.

The hiring procedure consists of two steps:

(1) An international committee will assess the applications and advise
applicants in going through the second step.

(2) The second step will initiate with publication of the opening
announcement in the Journal officiel de la Republique francaise (end
of February, 2004, deadline for filing early April).

Detailed information on the second part of the application procedure
will be provided separately to applicants.
