Dear Linguists,
Thanks to the generosity of the people listed at the end of this
message, we have collected over $7,000 of the $60,000 we need. That
means we need under $53,000 more in order to support the students who
will edit LINGUIST in the coming year.
Some of you have noticed that our student editors have been writing
most of the fund drive letters. This year's crew also planned the
fund drive from its inception: they designed and ordered the new
T-shirts and mousepads, took the promotional pictures, and put up the
fund drive web pages, with their theme of LINGUIST's development
through the years. They have also been spending several hours a day
processing donations--in addition to performing their regular LINGUIST
duties.
We have always been extremely lucky in the caliber of students we have
been able to enlist as LINGUIST graduate assistants. And they, of
course, have been lucky to have the support of you, our LINGUIST
subscribers.
Since 1993, when the LINGUIST assistantships were inaugurated,
LINGUIST subscribers have financed the educations of 45 outstanding
graduate students, including this year's crew. You have been
introduced to the current crew, one by one, through these fund drive
letters. But we thought that you also might be interested to learn
what some of the past editors are doing now.
Over the past 10 years, our donations have funded 2 students at Texas
A&M, 8 students at Wayne State University (where LINGUIST has had an
editing site for the past 4 years), and 35 students at Eastern
Michigan University (where we have had an editing site for 12 years).
Of the students who have finished their M.A. degrees at one of these
schools:
9 are in Ph.D. programs at leading universities
4 have finished Ph.D. degrees. Of these, two are on post-docs, and
one is already an Associate Professor!
3 have been accepted to Ph.D. programs for Sept, 2004
6 currently have jobs in the computer industry, mostly designing
software, but one is creating ontologies and another has become an
internet security consultant.
1 (the editor who designed our stationary and previous T-shirts) is a
graphic designer for a newspaper in California
1 (our Editor-In-Chief for 5 years) has returned to running her ballet
school full-time.
As you can see, most of the LINGUIST GAs you have supported have gone
on to pursue careers in linguistics. Hence your donations have not
only kept LINGUIST running; they have also contributed to the future
of the discipline.
I would like to emphasize that all your donations have gone directly
to student support; the faculty take no salary or other compensation
for directing LINGUIST. And, without that support, most of these
students would not have entered or finished an M.A. program.
Those of you who have contributed to LINGUIST over the past 10 years
can feel proud that you have helped these students pursue their
educational and career goals. Please help us support the outstanding
students who are now providing you with the services you have come to
expect from LINGUIST. If you have not yet donated to the Linguist
Fund Drive, please do so now. Contributions of any amount are greatly
appreciated.
With sincere thanks for your continued support,
-Helen Aristar-Dry

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
