Dear Subscribers,
Over the weekend, your donations have "funded" another one of our crew
members--Programmer Zhenwei Chen. As each on of our crew members is
funded, we will post their personal letter so that you can see where
your donations go! Below is Zhenwei's letter.

Dear Linguists,
I joined the LINGUIST List group at the end of 2001 after I finished
computer master degree. I have been working as programmer since
then. My work primarily focuses on the E-MELD project and the LINGUIST
Ask-A-Linguist, Job, and Review site subdivisions. FIELD (Field Input
Environment for Linguistic Data), one of the tools under E-MELD, is
what I am developing at this moment. FIELD is a linguistic data input
tool, which incorporates all the features of language archive best
practice recommended by the linguistic community. It is a great
opportunity for me to assist linguists in the scientific research.
Helen Aristar-Dry and Tony Aristar (site moderators), Laura
Buszard-Welcher, Martha Ratliff, and Veronica Grondona (linguistics
professors) give me plenty of professional guidance to make sure the
new software meet every requirement linguists need. Let me just
mention two examples.
A Unicode-compatible database presents a unique challenge for the
linguistic system developer. All the alphabets listed should be sorted
in appropriate order and searched efficiently. Acute C and Regular C
should be found side by side and rendered correctly. So the solution
is that the computer program has been designed to handle such
requirements; the works behind the scene make it possible.
A Unicode-compatible web page is a longtime goal for the LINGUIST
website. I developed web-based input tool for Unicode characters. It
is possible to type a standard keyboard character which is similar in
appearance to the one you want, and then select the exact character
required from a short dropdown menu of similar character. The current
version of tool includes all IPA and diacritics and other language
scripts, after several times of modification.
At LINGUIST, I feel doing all these works are really reciprocating
experiences from my computer programming background and enriching my
system development experience. I have gained unique expertise from the
discipline and also I have contributed my knowledge to the linguists.
Sincerely,
Zhenwei Chen
Programmer

for the coming year.
There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donate.html
You can also pledge right now and pay later, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/pledge.html
For all information on donating, including information on how to

ALREADY PLEDGED?
If you have already pledged to LINGUIST and would now like to pay
by credit card, please go to:
http://linguistlist.org/creditcard-general.html
and select 'PAY PREVIOUS PLEDGE' as the Type of Payment from the
dropdown list provided.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number
is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
