We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.
To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Subject: Unmarked Contour Tone
Dear linguistlisters,
I have two questions on the typology of tonal systems:
1) Are there tonal systems limited to the three following units: two level
tones (H and L) and only one contour tone?
2) If such systems exist, is the shape of this unique contour predictable?
Is it a falling or a rising tone?
Thanks in advance for any piece of information. I will post a summary if
there are enough responses.

For a book I'm writing on language acquistion, I'm interested in any
material, historic or current, that's been written on the effects of
landscape on language.
Thanks.
