3 positions open for researchers participating in the research unit
"Funktionalbegriffe und Frames" at the Heinrich-Heine-University of
Düsseldorf, Germany. 

The Heinrich-Heine-University invites applications for three positions in
the research unit FOR 600 "Funktionalbegriffe und Frames", funded by the
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation). The positions
have a minimum duration of two years and can be filled immediately. Payment
will be according to German public service pay scale BAT IIa/2 (= 50% of
BAT IIa). The researchers are expected to participate in a doctoral or
postdoctoral programme on a topic related to the projects. The
interdisciplinary research group (semantics, philosophy, cognitive
sciences, neurobiology, history of science) examines the functioning and
emerging of concept types and their integration into concept frames in the
context of intensive, medium-term cooperative projects (generally six years).

Position 1: The work will involve research on the general principles of the
development of specific types of concepts. The position is part of the
project A4 "Entwicklung von Funktionalbegriffen im Französischen". The
project's objective is to investigate the emergence of functional concepts
in French (like durée, distance, poids, température, etc.) and their
integration into lexicon and grammar. The ideal candidate would have
experience in cognitive semantics and theories of grammaticalization.

Position 2: The work will involve research on the development of a
particular type of verbal concepts that specify the value of a specific
dimension of an object (like French X mesure 10 mètres, X coûte 50
centîmes, X pèse 2 kilos, X dure 3 minutes, etc.). The position is part of
the project A2 "Statische Dimensionsverben" which compares functional and
grammatical aspects of such verbs in German, French, and Korean. The ideal
candidate would have experience in cognitive semantics and theories of
grammaticalization. 

Position 3: The work will involve research on the development of functional
concepts in urine diagnostics in French medical texts from the Renaissance
to the Enlightenment. The introduction of new laboratory techniques brought
about a paradigmatic revolution in the field of uroscopy which can be
described in detail by tracing the changing status of functional concepts
in established concept frames. The position is part of the project B5 "Die
Frames und Funktionalbegriffe der Harndiagnostik in ihrer Entwicklung seit
der frühen Neuzeit". The ideal candidate would have experience in cognitive
semantics and lexicology.  

Applicants should have a postgraduate degree (Master of Arts, Maîtrise,
etc.) in Linguistics, preferably French Linguistics. All positions require
excellent knowledge of French; position 1 and 2 further require knowledge
of Old French and Latin; position 3 requires good knowledge of Latin. 

The project is scheduled to begin August 2005, but the positions remain
open until filled; reviewing of applications begins immediately. To apply,
