The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:
Managing Ambiguity in Generated Text
This funded studentship will investigate the possibilities
for letting a Natural Language Generation program *avoid
ambiguities* in generated texts when these ambiguities
are likely to lead to misunderstandings. Two types of
challenges are anticipated: firstly, to use language
corpora to estimate computationally the likelihood of
misunderstandings; secondly, to sensibly balance the
likelihood of misunderstandings against other issues.
(For example, an ambiguity may only be avoided at the
cost of an increased size or a diminished readability
of the generated text). This PhD project is connected
with the EPSRC-funded `Controlled Generation of Text'
(COGENT) project, which involves researchers from the
Universities of Sussex, Brighton, and Aberdeen.
Applicants should hold a good degree in one of the
disciplines relevant to Computational Linguistics.
Knowledge of Natural Language Generation, statistical
parsing, and formal semantics of natural language
would be ideal.
This Studentship is funded under Aberdeen's Sixth Century
programme. Studentship comprises fees at Home/EU rate
£3,085 (fees for international students are not covered),
and Subsistence at £12,000 per annum for three years.
